A way to start filtering spam is to dump Outlook (-Express) and use an alternative mailclient with an embedded spam filter. Personally I advice Mozilla Thunderbird (4,5/5) if you already use Mozilla Firefox (4,5/5) as browser. It has more potential than Outlook Express and less than Outlook, open source and stable. But,... professionally I have to stick to Outlook. So,... FIRST CHOICE (PAYWARE) :
This is the first software that Nondisputandum buys to filter spam. With regrets but convinced. Remember 29/07/2007 as the day that freeware was abandoned by this nerd for spam filtering. This is the first payware ever that receives the Superb! Must Have! indication.
The best spam filter that I found so far is Dutch. (Europe / The Netherlands)
Yep! One of the developers is the man behind HitmanPro. I learned to trust this guy. The software is named Caretaker, build by SurfRight. This intelligent spam filter is something new (first release 26/6/2007). It does far better than silly (once brilliant) bayesian filtering and filters in different layers. If this would be marketing, I would yell like a hypomaniac TV advertiser: “Hey,... and you don’t even need to tune it. No need to set it up. Install it and forget it. It will change your life...” Well,... it does. Less than 1% false positives and getting better every day. The upgrades follow rapidly. It works not only with Outlook (Express) but also with Thunderbird, IncrediMail and other clients. And as a bonus, it ads an invisible marker in your sent mails that informs other spam fighters that your mail is clean. You’ll get through. Btw, it doesn’t conflict with other antispam tools. They offer a 1 month free trial so no need to rush & pay. Try it. SECOND CHOICE (FREEWARE) :
If you use Outlook, and don’t want to pay, consider Spambayes Sourceforge (4/5) An open source bayesian antispam classifier written in Python and a perfect plug-in for Outlook that will rapidly learn to recognize old fashioned spam. No, it does not recognize the new pdf and jpg based spam. Spambayes allows you to split up your spam in two files: “Junk suspect” and “Junk”. With one click you can place spam in the file that YOU tell Spambayes to consider as your spam-junk file and during that simple click it will have learned to recognize similar spam when it enters Outlook (express).
THIRD CHOICE (FREEWARE):
If you use Outlook or another mail client, and don’t want to pay or use Spambayes, try Spamihilator (4/5) It uses a Bayesian filter, blacklists and white lists independent of the mail client. It detects and configures your pop3 clients, works with Microsoft Outlook Express/2000/XP/2003, Opera, Eudora, Pegasus Mail, Phoenix Mail, Netscape/Mozilla and IncrediMail. They also offer a free stand alone POP3 Notifier to inform you when mail has arrived. The status window can easily be hidden or even made transparent. So the spam does not go into a map of your mail client but is collected into a file that is aprt of Spamihilator. Of course you can teach the program what is and what is not spam whenever it makes a error in judgment.
Choosing between Spambayes and Spamihilator is a matter of taste. If you want it integrated in Outlook, get Spambayes. If you prefer it to be a stand-alone tool with lots of configuration options, try Spamihilator.
If you want to try both,.. don’t do it at the same time. Don’t forget to deinstall and clean up your computer before installing another spam filter.
